Vanuatu Connections
It has been over eight years since a small group of Nivan (Vanuatan) seasonal workers arrived in Warragul. The workers arrived as a group of five, initially for 6 months, who were replaced by another group of five for six months, and these groups alternated over the next few years. The members of the groups changed as their life circumstances changed, but several of the Nivans in Warragul now have been part of the congregation for almost eight years and one is now an elder.
Members of the WUC congregation have been involved, along with the Rotary Club of Warragul, with projects in Vanuatu, including providing containers of aid after the devastating cyclones, refurbishing the children’s ward at the Central hospital in Port Vila and more recently in supporting the Vanuatu Prevention of Blindness project.
As the Seasonal Worker program morphed into the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme the numbers of workers from Vanuatu to Warragul has increased to over 50.
Due to the nature of their work, attending worship meetings on a Sunday morning is difficult, therefore an alternative music-based worship is offered on the fourth Saturday of each month. We look forward to the growth of this ministry with Nivan music eventually being shared with the wider community.
Acknowledgement
The Ancient of Days breathed life into this land and her peoples. From time beyond our reckoning the Gunnai, Kurnai People, traditional Custodians, have blessed this place through their law and customs, their care and life.
We pay respect to their Elders and leaders past and present and pray for the future of their communities.
May we walk gently and respectfully on this Land. Amen.
